Collective Social Innovation
University of Cambridge
Shaping Horizons is a community driven by 100+ young volunteers and staff from 30+ countries. We teach young innovators transferable skills using innovation tools, and they develop them by building social enterprises. We also train corporate employees on remote leadership, and they apply their lessons by mentoring our innovators. Our vision is to upskill and empower every young person to be part of the change they want to see.
Some facts:
- R&D at the University of Cambridge was the basis for creating 28 open digital innovation tools on transferable and entrepreneurial skills
- A total of 148 volunteers have built our community in 113,000 volunteer hours, leading to 43,000 hours of training to 248 young innovators and 900 hours of training to 45 corporate mentors
- 20%+ of our youth-led innovation projects continue to operate two years after our programmes
- We incorporated in August 2021 as a company limited by shares and certified as a social enterprise by Social Enterprise UK in 2022. Since then we have been accelerated by Allia, recognised by the EU commission as one of the top 10 solutions for upskilling in 2021, and celebrated by the UN for re-imagining volunteering for sustainability
